Man Dies After Vehicle Leaves State Route 70 and Strikes Utility Pole East of Quincy, With Crash Investigation Still Open

QUINCY, CA — A man died after his vehicle left State Route 70 east of Quincy and crashed into a utility pole on July 23, 2026. The California Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around 2:58 p.m. east of Maddalena Road.

Officials said the driver was traveling westbound before the vehicle went off the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews tried to save him.

What the vehicle hit

CHP said the vehicle struck several objects after leaving the highway, including two metal paddle markers, a barbed wire fence, a sign, a metal gate post and then a utility pole. The sequence of impacts was reported as part of the collision investigation.

No information was released about whether other vehicles were involved. Investigators have not said what caused the car to leave the road.

Response at the scene

CHP officers and Eastern Plumas District Paramedics responded to the crash site and attempted life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, the driver died where the collision occurred.
