79-Year-Old Woman Killed After Tesla Crashes Into Simi Valley Restaurant Patio in California Shopping Center

Dean Andujar July 16, 2026 Article

SIMI VALLEY, CA — A 79-year-old woman was killed Monday afternoon when a Tesla left a roadway and struck her outside a restaurant patio in Simi Valley, authorities said. The car then crashed into the outdoor seating area of an Urbane Cafe in a shopping center parking lot.

Police said the crash happened about 2:30 p.m. outside the restaurant near a Target store. The victim, who lived in Agoura Hills, has not been publicly identified.

Investigators said the white Tesla was traveling northbound through the parking lot and trying to make a right turn eastbound toward Madera when it failed to make the turn. Sgt. Rick Morton said the vehicle jumped the curb, went over the sidewalk and hit the woman as she walked outside the restaurant.

The Tesla then slammed into the building, leaving broken glass, bent chairs and scattered tables across the sidewalk area. Police said two customers had just gotten up to leave and were narrowly missed.

The driver, a 64-year-old woman, was behind the wheel with four juvenile passengers in the car, police said. The driver complained of a wrist injury, and she and one juvenile were taken to a hospital for minor treatment.

The other three juveniles were released to family members. First responders found the victim trapped underneath the vehicle when they arrived at the scene.

Police said the crash does not appear to have been intentional. Even so, investigators are still working to determine what caused the Tesla to leave the driving area and strike the pedestrian.

Morton said officials have not yet determined whether speed played a role. He also said investigators are still looking into whether mechanical failure or driver impairment may have been factors.

Community Reacts At Scene

Witnesses and shoppers watched as emergency crews worked outside the restaurant. A bouquet of flowers was later left near the crash site.

One Simi Valley resident, Dana Aghassi, said the woman had simply been out having lunch before her life was cut short. Police said the victim’s name will be released later.
