Pickup Truck Crash Near Wickenburg Kills Two and Shuts U.S. 93 in Both Directions for Hours, Arizona Officials Say

WICKENBURG, AZ — A deadly collision involving a pickup truck and a car hauler forced a full shutdown of U.S. 93 for hours north of Wickenburg on July 6. Arizona officials said both drivers died at the scene after the vehicles caught fire.

How the crash unfolded

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the pickup was traveling southbound when it drifted into the northbound lanes for reasons that have not been explained. It then struck the car hauler just after 7 a.m. about 30 miles north of Wickenburg.

Officials said the impact left both vehicles engulfed in flames.

Drivers identified by officials

DPS said the pickup driver was a 52-year-old man from California. The car hauler driver was a 56-year-old man from Maricopa.

Neither man has been publicly identified by name.

Highway shut down for hours

Arizona Department of Transportation officials closed the southbound lanes of U.S. 93 at the Interstate 40 junction. Northbound traffic was stopped at State Route 71 as crews responded to the scene.

The highway has since reopened after being closed in both directions for part of the day.

What officials have said

The crash remains under investigation, and DPS has not said why the pickup crossed into oncoming traffic. Officials have only confirmed the sequence of events and the two deaths.

The agency said the collision happened on July 6 and released additional details the following day.
