Anonymous Tips Lead to 83 Arrests, 104 Closed Cases Across Southern Arizona Through 88-Crime Program

TUCSON, AZ — Anonymous tips from Southern Arizona residents helped law enforcement make 83 arrests and close 104 cases during the latest fiscal year, according to 88-Crime. The nonprofit said public information also led to the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs and firearms.

Officials said the program’s results show how confidential reports can move active investigations forward and help agencies clear serious cases.

Recoveries and arrests

88-Crime said investigators recovered $38,040 in stolen property, $40,165 in illegal drugs and nine firearms with help from tipsters. The program also paid out $55,600 in rewards during the fiscal year, with all of that money coming from private donations.

The group said tips played a role in 30 fugitive investigations involving people wanted for crimes including homicide, aggravated assault, firearms violations and human smuggling.

Cases that were cleared

Officials said anonymous reports helped solve two homicides, one sexual assault case and one hit-and-run. In addition, the program said numerous other felony investigations benefited from information submitted by the public.

The results reflect the kind of information law enforcement says can help connect suspects, evidence and locations that otherwise might not be identified.

How the program works

88-Crime is a nonprofit that lets people report criminal activity anonymously and partners with local law enforcement agencies and the Pima County Attorney’s Office. Program Coordinator James Allerton said the results show the direct effect community members can have on public safety across Southern Arizona.

He said anonymous tips contribute to arrests, case closures and safer communities when residents choose to share information.

People can submit anonymous tips by calling 88CRIME at 520-882-7463, visiting 88crime.org or using the P3 Tips mobile app. The program says the tip line gives residents a way to share information without revealing their identity.
