Nevada State Police Say Driver Crossed All Lanes Before Fatal Rollover Near Reno Fernley Raceway

FERNLEY, NV — A Nevada State Police investigation says a driver went off the roadway, crossed every travel lane and overturned in a deadly crash Friday near the Reno Fernley Raceway. The wreck happened just south of Fernley on U.S. 50 Alternate near the U.S. 95A junction in Lyon County.

Authorities said the driver of a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer died at the scene. The driver of a white Chevrolet Silverado was not hurt.

How the crash unfolded

Investigators said the Trailblazer was heading north when it drifted to the right shoulder and hit a paddle marker. The vehicle then rotated back into the roadway, crossed all lanes and left the road on the opposite side.

Debris from the shoulder reportedly struck the Silverado as it traveled south. The Trailblazer then overturned, went through a fence and hit several wooden poles on private property before coming to rest on its side.

Victim identified by police

Nevada State Police identified the dead driver as 33-year-old Joeseph E. Cummings of Silver Springs. Medical personnel pronounced Cummings dead at the scene after the rollover.

Officials said the Silverado driver reported no injuries and remained at the crash site.

First responders reached scene

North Lyon Fire was dispatched just before 3 p.m. on Friday to what was first reported as a single-vehicle rollover near the raceway. When firefighters arrived, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office personnel were already trying life-saving measures.

Despite the response from emergency crews, the driver died at the scene. Authorities also said there were no passengers in the Trailblazer.

Crash probe continues

Nevada Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 3:02 p.m. on July 17 south of the 10 Mile Marker. The Nevada Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team is handling the investigation.

Officials initially warned that traffic in the area was delayed and told drivers to use an alternate route between Fernley and Silver Springs while crews worked the scene.
