Woman Killed and Infant Injured in Rollover Crash on Riverside County Freeway Near Day Street, CHP Says

RIVERSIDE, CA — A woman was killed and an infant suffered minor injuries after a single-car rollover crash on State Route 60 in Riverside on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators said the crash happened around 2:10 p.m. east of the 215 Freeway and 60 Freeway interchange near Day Street.

CHP said a 2014 Acura MDX was moving at a high rate of speed while passing vehicles in the center median shoulder when the driver lost control. The vehicle overturned several times, and the woman was thrown into eastbound lanes of SR-60.

How the crash unfolded

Officers said the driver was then struck by a 2024 Tesla Model 3 after hitting the roadway. Fire personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators the Acura crossed the center divider and rolled repeatedly before coming to a stop. The Tesla driver was not hurt, CHP said.

Victim identified by coroner

The Riverside County Coroner identified the driver as 24-year-old Cheyenne Phillips of Chino. CHP said the infant was seated in a car seat in the backseat of the Acura and was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators have not said whether the woman and child were related, and that part of the incident remains under review.

Questions still under review

CHP said investigators are still working to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The agency issued a SigAlert while crews investigated and closed all southbound lanes for several hours.

Traffic reopened shortly before 4 p.m., according to the release.
