Motorcyclist Dies in Bay Bridge Toll Plaza Crash That Blocked Westbound I-80 Lanes During the San Francisco Morning Commute

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A motorcyclist died after a crash on the Bay Bridge early Thursday morning, leaving westbound traffic backed up for hours during the commute. The California Highway Patrol said the wreck was reported around 5:30 a.m. just west of the metering lights on the bridge’s westbound side.

A CHP officer reached the scene within minutes and tried CPR on the rider, who was found unconscious in the roadway. Emergency crews from the Oakland Fire Department later pronounced the man dead at about 5:45 a.m.

Crash investigation underway

Investigators have not yet determined exactly what caused the collision. CHP said it is looking at whether the motorcyclist struck another vehicle or was traveling too fast while lane splitting.

After being thrown from the bike, the rider was hit by a box truck, according to CHP spokesperson Officer Mark Andrews.

Truck driver stayed on scene

Andrews said the truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The rider was described as a man who appeared to be about 30 years old.

Authorities are withholding his name until the Alameda County Coroner’s Office can notify next of kin.

Traffic tied up for hours

The crash blocked the two right lanes until about 8:30 a.m., slowing westbound traffic across one of the Bay Area’s busiest commute routes. The backup stretched through the morning as crews worked the scene and investigators documented what happened.

Drivers traveling through the area were urged to expect delays while the lanes were closed.

Witnesses asked to call CHP

CHP is asking anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam video from the area to contact the San Francisco office. Officers said witness accounts could help piece together the sequence of events before the fatal collision.
