California Recovers More Than $76 Million in Stolen Goods as Retail Theft Task Force Tops 5,300 Arrests Statewide

SACRAMENTO, CA — California officials say the state has recovered more than $76.2 million in stolen merchandise and arrested over 5,300 suspects since the California Highway Patrol launched its Organized Retail Crime Task Force in 2019. Governor Gavin Newsom said the unit has now tracked down more than 1.6 million stolen items and helped disrupt theft rings operating across the state.

The governor’s office said the task force and its agency partners have carried out 4,718 investigations since it began. Officials framed the effort as part of a broader public safety push aimed at protecting shoppers, retailers, and businesses.

This Year's Enforcement

So far in 2026, investigators have opened 329 cases, made 315 arrests, seized 67,689 stolen items, and recovered $6.3 million in stolen property, according to the governor’s office. In June alone, CHP and partner agencies logged 65 investigations and 105 arrests.

Officials said June arrests were up 87.5% from the same month last year, while the value of items recovered reached more than $1.28 million, a 125.4% increase from June 2025. Investigators also recovered 2,461 stolen items during the month.

Recent Store Operations

CHP highlighted two recent enforcement actions tied to the task force. On June 16, investigators served a search warrant at a suspect’s home linked to multiple thefts from Target stores in Southern California and seized thousands of stolen trading cards valued at nearly $15,000.

Officers also found two firearms, including one that had been reported stolen. The case is being reviewed for possible gang enhancements, officials said.

Retail Partners Join In

Another operation on June 26 brought CHP together with Nordstrom, Nike, GAP, and Abercrombie at the Outlets at Orange. That effort led to 13 arrests and the recovery of 87 stolen retail items worth more than $4,100.

State officials said the task force depends on cooperation with local police departments, sheriffs’ offices, district attorneys, retailers, and other regional law enforcement partners to identify and dismantle organized theft groups.

Crime Trends In State

California officials also pointed to broader crime declines in Department of Justice data covering 2024 to 2025. The state said the homicide rate fell 18.6%, robbery dropped 19.9%, property crime declined 14.3%, motor vehicle theft fell 25.8%, and violent crime decreased 10.2%.

The report also says California’s homicide rate reached its lowest level since statewide record-keeping began about 60 years ago. Officials presented the retail theft crackdown as one piece of that larger public safety strategy.
