Victor Valley Community College Basketball Player Jhenéy Wallace Killed in Rollover Crash on California’s I-15 Near Devore

DEVORE, CA — A 20-year-old college basketball player from Southern California was killed Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in rolled off Interstate 15 and dropped about 80 feet down an embankment in the Cajon Pass. Authorities identified the victim as Jhenéy Wallace, also known as Jheney Harris, a Victorville resident who played for Victor Valley Community College.

The crash happened north of Kenwood Avenue in Devore at about 1:51 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Officials said Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crash Scene Details

The wreck took place on southbound I-15, a corridor known for frequent serious collisions in the mountain pass between San Bernardino County communities. The CHP said the vehicle went over the embankment, but investigators have not released a full explanation for what led to the rollover.

Authorities have not said what may have caused the crash or why the vehicle left the freeway. The circumstances remain under investigation.

Friends Also Hurt

Wallace was not alone in the vehicle. Two other people were inside at the time: her best friend and the friend’s mother, both of whom were critically injured and taken to a local trauma center.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene, while the others survived the initial crash but required emergency treatment.

Family And Team Mourn

Wallace’s mother, Tamara Wallace, told KTLA5 that her daughter was a supportive older sibling, full of energy, and someone who constantly encouraged her family. She said she called Jhenéy after hearing about the crash, but an officer answered and delivered the devastating news.

Her college team also posted a tribute on Instagram, describing her as more than a teammate and saying her impact would not be forgotten. Wallace had also played varsity volleyball in high school and hoped to build a career in the WNBA.

Memorial And Fundraising

Community members have already begun organizing support for the family. A GoFundMe campaign created to help with funeral preparations had raised more than $14,500 toward a $15,000 goal.

A memorial event honoring Wallace is scheduled for July 19 at 5 p.m. at Civic Center Park in Apple Valley. The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not announced any additional findings.
