Tesla Semi Involved in First Known Fatal Crash in Dayton, Nevada, After Rear-Ending Stopped Cars on U.S. Highway 50

Dean Andujar July 19, 2026 Article

DAYTON, NV — A Tesla Semi was involved in a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 50 in Dayton, Nevada, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, in what appears to be the first known deadly collision involving the electric heavy-duty truck. The wreck happened around 7:20 a.m. at Traditions Parkway, about 40 miles east of Reno and near Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada.

Authorities said the truck hit two passenger vehicles that were stopped at a traffic signal. Two people died at the scene, and a third person was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada State Police Highway Patrol said the semi struck the vehicles from behind. Initial information gathered at the scene suggested the driver may have fallen asleep, but investigators have not confirmed that as the cause.

Nevada Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, and officials said the truck was seized as evidence.

Responders included deputies from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol officers, the Central Lyon County Fire Department and the Nevada Department of Transportation. U.S. 50 was closed in both directions for a time after the collision.

Authorities said more information is expected early the following week, but no official finding has been announced on what caused the crash or whether any vehicle systems played a role.

The Tesla Semi is the company’s battery-electric Class 8 truck, built at Gigafactory Nevada. The vehicle involved in the crash was identified through reporting and scene details after authorities first described it only as a semi-truck.

The crash has drawn attention because the Semi is not yet widely available to the public, making this incident one of the most closely watched involving Tesla’s commercial vehicle program.

The investigation is still active, and law enforcement has not released any final conclusions about fatigue, speed, or other contributing factors. For now, officials say they are continuing to collect evidence and witness statements.

The deadly collision adds to scrutiny of commercial truck safety on Nevada highways, especially in cases where driver fatigue may be a factor.
