Mckenna “Mak” Whitham is officially the youngest female to sign professionally with NJ/NY Gotham FC on July 26, 2024 which makes her the youngest signing in NWSL history. Around just 8 years old, Mckenna Whitham knew she wanted to be a professional soccer player. She wanted to continue playing the sport she loves, but what Whitham didn’t know is that her dream would become a reality sooner rather than later (abcnews.go.com).
She is now 13 years old signing with Gotham FC and her birthday was on the following Saturday. “ I processed it, and it’s still new to me,” said Whitham “But, I mean, I’m not going to be cocky about it. I’m going to stay humble. And I’m still going to keep developing. My goal is to be a top player in the NWSL, and I know that Gotham will help me become that player.” said Whithman.
The contract that she signed, is guaranteed to run all the way through 2024-2028 but will be effective starting on January 1, 2025 so she will push as hard as she can and will be putting in all her effort before the contract officially starts. She wants to show up bigger and better.

She continues to make history by becoming the youngest player to debut in a first-division women/men soccer match in the United States, July 28th 2024. Within the 80th minute of the match between NJ/NY Gotham FC and Washington Spirit, held in Chester, Pennsylvania. Whithams entered the game and subbed in for Katie Stengel in a 2-1 win over. Washington Spirit, in their NWSL x Liga Femenil Summer cup match in Chester, Pennsylvania. Within those 17 long minutes on the field, Whitham’s attacking progress improved immediately, she showcased her understanding of the game and her real dedication to her team’s success.
You can see Whitham’s showing a perfect example on defending by pushing them back towards their own goal, she is not only defending her goal and goalie but she is also creating more opportunities for her teammates to capitalize on and make more openings. When watching Whitham play on the pitch, one of the most noticeable aspects of her play was how quick she is with her feet and how good she is at locking her ankle.
