Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Interstate 680 Snarls East Bay Commute From Walnut Creek to Oakland With Major Freeway Delays

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A fatal motorcycle crash and a separate injury collision tied up major East Bay freeways Wednesday morning, creating slowdowns from Walnut Creek to Oakland. Commuters faced heavy backups on Interstate 680, Highway 580 and Interstate 80 as the rush-hour mess spread across several key routes.

Crash Gridlocks Freeways

The California Highway Patrol said the fatal wreck involving a motorcycle happened at 5:45 a.m. Traffic thickened north of Richmond into Oakland, while delays also built through Walnut Creek and along Interstate 80 near the approach to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Second Collision Adds Delay

CHP also reported an injury collision on southbound Interstate 680 north of Geary Road in Walnut Creek. That crash was blocking left lanes and sending backups deep into central Contra Costa County.

Delays Reach Bay Bridge

By 9 a.m., traffic had cleared on Highway 680, but the Bay Bridge approach was still moving stop-and-go in the non-carpool lanes. Officials expected those delays to continue until at least 10 a.m.

Commuters Told To Adjust

Authorities urged drivers to expect significant delays and consider public transit or other alternatives if possible. The morning disruptions added another difficult commute for East Bay travelers moving between Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
