KidSuper is a clothing brand founded by Colm Dillane that is known for its fresh streetwear designs. The brand’s fashion shows are playful and eccentric, often turning into clever performances.
The KidSuper Fall Winter 24 show featured garments that unraveled as the models made their way down the runway. According to Dillane, he intended to tie in his collection with string theory.
String theory suggests that everything in the universe is made of multidimensional strings rather than round particles. From this theory, Dillane became inspired by the idea that everything in the universe is interconnected despite it not being so apparent at first glance.
KidSuper never disappoints with its unique streetwear couture but the brand’s FW24 collection truly caught the attention of many. In this collection of designs, Dillane playfully combines science with fashion in a completely unexpected way. As the show was nearing its end, a model wearing a black knitted sweater and pants made their way down the runway; the garments unraveled more and more with every step. Both pieces were eventually reduced to a single string, which is impressive in more ways than one.
KidSuper shared the process of constructing the crochet top and bottoms in a way that would allow them to completely unravel into only one string of yarn. The execution of this idea is so impressive because both pieces had to be crocheted using only one continuous string of yarn and the KidSuper team had to repeatedly test run the outfit, meaning the clothes had to be constructed multiple times. The actual presentation of the outfit on the runway went relatively smooth besides the model having to help unravel the very end of the sweater.
All art is interpreted in several different ways and with the recent controversies of fast fashion it is not surprising that there are questions about whether KidSuper’s unraveling design is a protest against fast fashion. Dillane has shared that string theory inspired his collection, however his entire goal is for KidSuper to inspire people to think outside of the box. That is truly the beauty of art; it speaks to everyone differently.
