How we appear to others heavily influences our day-to-day interactions. The way a person chooses to dress and carry themselves can contribute to their good traits and show their personality.
The way some people dress doesn’t matter much and they can feel comfortable regardless of what they’re wearing. To others, dressing a certain way boosts their confidence and can reflect who they are to anyone around them.“Fashion is something we deal with every day. Even people who say they don’t care what they wear choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day.”(What is Fashion? | PBS). The aspect of fashion within society is constantly growing, and as more and more people find themselves intrigued in finding their clothing niche, trends in style evolve and change.
In 2024, fashion is still prominent in the lives of many, and is composed of many unique trends that are the developments of previous generations. Today, the way someone dresses is less restricted by societal norms and the creativity in how someone presents themselves is praised. But in the same regard, many things differ from random clothes put together or a specific style that one is catering to.
Today, fashion has become slightly oversaturated, as many large “fashion” influencers on social media platforms cater to popular trends, leading viewers to conclude that whatever they see on their feed is the standard that fashion should be held at. This is unrealistic and leads any aspiring person who wants to get into fashion to develop poor conceptions of what fashion means. The truth is, fashion is whatever you want it to be. There is no right or wrong when it comes to how a person wants to dress as it is our choice to wear what we want, specifically in clothes we are comfortable in. Clothing is an accent of our personalities, and that is an important concept that has been diluted in 2024. Fashion is so great because it is so free, and that freedom is often taken for granted just to fit in with others. Baggy jeans, graphic tees, new Jordans; are all mimics of what clothing is supposed to do, which is to add to a person’s identity and individuality. Although there is nothing necessarily wrong with the clothing previously mentioned, lots of people tend to cater to popular clothing in hopes they fit in with others. If you’re not following trends or dressing “normally,” you’re not fashionable. That is the construct that many follow today and is the reason for the oversaturation of many streetwear/workwear styles. So what can we do about it?
Well, first of all, it is important to acknowledge that fashion is an umbrella term, meaning that it encompasses all different types of clothing and styles. Regardless of how you dress, you are still fashionable, as your clothes reflect what you’re comfortable wearing and certain traits of your personality, “Our personality traits, interests, values, and experiences influence our dressing style.”(Dressing And Personality Development – Cotstyle Fashion). Second of all, be open to trying new styles on yourself and experimenting with proportions and statement pieces. These add to an outfit and make you more unique. Lastly, be yourself. If you be yourself, it will be easy to understand how your clothing can compliment you. Then from there, you can begin experimenting with various clothing.
As fashion continues to evolve and trends come and go, it is in the best interest of us all to express ourselves through our clothing and allow others to do the same. The way we dress has come a long way, and it is important that we continue to evolve it. From survival to style, we revolutionized clothing and gave it an emotional meaning that everyone can relate to. We are unique in many ways, and we have the capability to demonstrate that through clothing. Each person has the right to freedom of expression, and therefore our ability to express ourselves through our different fashion styles is a beautiful gift that contributes to our humanity.
